QC Co-Lab Road Trip May 19th!

The folks at QC Co-Lab have invited us over to check out their space and talk shop on May 19th.

The QC Co-Lab is a community driven non-profit organization formed in March of 2010 under the banner to create a haven for technologists, entrepreneurs, engineers, educators and hobbyists to meet and create their wildest dreams in the Quad Cities, Iowa. The Quad Cities, a five-city metropolitan region situated on the Mid-east Iowa / Northwest Illinois border, is full of a rich artistic culture complimented with a budding technical sector to compliment large centers of industry. The facility itself is a 4000 square foot facility situated five miles from the mighty Mississippi River containing dedicated project rooms including a conference room, industrial and electrical workshops, a classroom and AV studio.

Currently enough of us are going to fill a car but if there’s enough interest we’ll rent a van. The open house runs 1:00pm to 7:00pm so we’ll be leaving Iowa City at noon and leaving Davenport by 7:00pm. Please let us know using the below google form if you’re interested in going.

Awesome breakfast and lunch tomorrow courtesy of Source Media Group!

Source Media Group is going all out with the food for tomorrow providing a breakfast, lunch, snacks, and beverages. As an incentive to show up early, the breakfast menu will be scrambled eggs, bacon & sausage, hash browns, fresh fruit salad, bagels, assorted muffins & sweet rolls. For lunch we’ll be ordering pizza from Cranky Hanks. We need to put in our order by 10:00am, so if you plan on rolling in later and want lunch please email (info@hackerspaceicr.org) or tweet your preference. There’ll also be assorted sodas, water, coffee, and snacks.

The event will be in the Gazette building (500 3rd Avenue SE Cedar Rapids, IA 52404) but the room has changed since last time. Don’t know the room name but signs will be up to point you in the right direction. We’ll be in the room where they used to print and bundle newspapers.

Official time is 9:30am to 4:00pm but we may stay later.

Please spread the word!

April’s Meetup & the Pre Open Iowa Hackathon

Everything’s coming together for our April 28th event.

As always, everyone is welcome to come and work on whatever they want, but this time a number of us will be working on preparing for the Iowa City / Cedar Rapids Open Iowa Hackathon (which will occur sometime in the next few months). This means finding data sources, cleaning data, finding partners in government and industry, working on using the data, etc.

The Source Media Group is sponsoring us with space & wireless in the Nile Kinnick room of the Gazette building in Cedar Rapids. Hours will probably be 9:00am to 4:00pm or later if we’re still going strong. Breakfast and lunch may be provided, details to come. If not, we’ll end up ordering in pizza or something like last time.

Please invite anyone who might be interested, and if you’re going to a group meeting of something related, please let them know.

Two interesting events this weekend

First up in Iowa City: Animation and Interaction at the University of Iowa (AIUI) is putting on the Animation and Interaction Convention April 13th & 14th in Pomerantz Center C20. They’ve invited interesting speakers from the animation and games industries and the event is free and open to the public.

The second event is a Circuit Bending DIY instrument workshop being put on by Cole Mccray through The Epicenter on April 14th at 10 am. The class will be in the restore habitat for humanity building on 6th St in Cedar Rapids.

If you know of anyone who might be interested please let them know!

We have a great hacker community in the corridor area and it’s exciting to imagine what we can create together.  The current plan is to start hosting events at people’s houses ala Super Happy Dev House.  I’ll be updating this space soon with proposed dates, a google groups account, a twitter account, etc.
